By definition, ISO 9000 is a series of generic standards on quality assurance and quality management.

ISO 9000 was created by the International Organization for Standardization : The International Organization for Standardization was founded in 1946. It is based in Geneva, Switzerland, has over 110 member bodies, the U.S. representatives to ISO is the American National Standards Institute or ANSI. To date, ISO has created in excess of 3500 standards which are used in various industries around the world.

In the family of ISO 9000 standards, there are three contractual quality system models:

ISO 9001 generally applies to manufacturing companies that design and build their own products and is comprised of 20 quality system requirements.


ISO 9002 applies to facilities that whose products are designed and serviced by a subcontractor and is comprised of 19 quality system requirements.

ISO 9003 has the most limited scope and only requires conformance to final inspection and test procedures and is comprised of 16 quality system requirements.
