ATS offers a complete range of mechanical testing services. The Chesapeake, VA location hosts a well-equipped in-house machine shop that provides timely preparation of test specimens or any special fixturing. Our experienced test engineers can also help you design customized special testing programs to test your products.

Weld Testing and Weld Qualifications
ATS’ welding engineers uphold industry standards by assisting in the preparation of welding procedure specifications and weld procedure / performance qualifications.

Applied Technical Services, LLC uses a wide variety of techniques and standards such as ASME, AWS, API and PED/EN to serve our clients’ diverse weld testing needs. Many companies require their welders be qualified, and at ATS we are able to test all aspects of weld procedure and performance qualifications by conducting destructive and nondestructive tests to ensure conformance to code requirements.

Applied Technical Services is equipped to handle customized Load Tests, Pressure Tests, Accelerated Life Cycle Tests and Wear/Fatigue Tests. Our Special Testing Group has the equipment and knowledge to satisfy a wide variety of testing requirements.
Applied Technical Services has performed numerous load tests on a variety of items ranging from space shuttle parts to hand railings. We can perform this testing in-house or on-site using customer supplied fixtures or fixtures designed by ATS specifically for our clients. Our engineers work closely with our clients to simulate life-like scenarios to achieve the most accurate test results.

Applied Technical Services has the capability to perform pressure tests, both in-house and in the field. Our pressure capabilities range from vacuum to 20,000 psig. With these capabilities, we are able to test a large variety of items from proof pressure testing nuclear plant components to burst testing copper tubes. We also have the capabilities to conduct helium leak testing.

ATS can accommodate the needs of our clients in the hardness testing area with capabilities in various hardness scales such as, Brinell, Rockwell, Superficial Rockwell, Webster, Barcol, Leeb, Knoop and Vickers. (On-site and Lab Testing)
Strain Gage Testing & Strain Measurements
Strain gages are used to determine material stress due to static and dynamic loads coming from internal and external sources such as mechanical, thermal and pressure. ATS can apply the appropriate strain gage type to the test surface, perform data acquisition and provide results to assist in identifying the stress levels to avoid mechanical failure or fatigue. The data can also assist you in verifying your design criteria and/or validate your finite element analysis results.
Engineering
Mechanical, civil, chemical, industrial, and materials engineers provide a wide range of services to all industries. Through good engineering practice and hands-on practical problem solving, we help clients reduce risk and cut cost. We accomplish this by assessing existing equipment and designing repairs and retrofits while focusing on safety and economics.

Boiler Inspection Services
Fast, cost effective boiler surveys are performed by highly trained, experienced personnel using state of the art ultrasonic data loggers. Liquid penetrant inspection of composite tube material is performed to identify damaged areas, while non-ferrous coating surveys determine the overall thickness of the composite material. On-site computerized reporting is provided to give you quick, accurate results. Data analysis, trending and forecasting is also available.
On-site services include radiography, magnetic particle, copper sulfate and visual examinations. Additionally, we can offer Digital Radiography services which eliminate typical “shoot windows” and allow all contractors to remain working while radiography ensues. This provides “near” instant results, greater productivity and greatly reduced outage time.
Paper Machine Inspections
ATS uses fully automated thickness crawlers capable of on-line velocity adjustments to compensate for changes in acoustical properties inherent in the casting process. This allows for an accurate thickness scan across the full length of a dryer can.
Internal visual examination of paper machine dryers is one of the most efficient and effective methods of inspection. During a visual inspection, the condition of internal components along with areas of shell thinning and grooving can be determined.
Magnetic particle inspection of the heads and journals of paper machine dryers, along with ultrasonic soundness inspection of the bolts is performed to find minor defects before they become major problems.
Construction Services
Our Chesapeake office has inspectors trained and certified to perform the following types of visual weld inspections:
Tanks, Pressure Vessels, and Piping Systems
Through the use of automated ultrasonic thickness crawlers, continuous thickness scans can be performed on the shell of carbon steel tanks and vessels, as well as piping systems. This inspection data is presented in a graphical format that can include minimum wall thickness calculations in accordance with a variety of standards such as API-653. ATS employs an experienced staff of API -653, API-510, and API-570 certified inspectors.
